The gallery is open for regular hours Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM and by appointment. Monthly exhibitions are celebrated with an opening reception on the second Saturday of every month from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in accordance with the St. Claude Arts District’s Gallery Openings.
The UNO-St. Claude Gallery opened on October 31, 2008, primarily as an exhibition venue for The University of New Orleans Department of Fine Arts alumni, graduate students, and faculty. However, its scope reaches further into visual arts on the local, national, and international levels. The gallery is a singular aspect of this university among other institutions of higher education in the city; UNO is the only local university to maintain an off-campus art gallery. Situated in the St. Claude Arts District, it is in a unique position of community outreach to its neighborhood, as well as other institutions and organizations in the fields of the arts. In this light, it is an asset to the University, in its mission to advance “shared knowledge” and add to our region’s “culture and economy.”
As a non-profit academic resource, the gallery culturally enriches the metropolitan area with presentation of contemporary visual arts. It shows research, experimentation, and individual expression in an academic environment. It represents the visual arts at UNO to the city and to its peer institutions.
To meet this mission, the gallery hosts exhibitions of faculty work and dedicates part of the academic year to Master of Fine Arts thesis shows. It is a locus for alumni activity, including shows and curatorial efforts. Additionally, the gallery is the exhibition space for the Center Austria Exchange exposition, a product of more than a decade of collaboration with the University’s International Studies Innsbruck program. The gallery also provides space for UNO special events, including interdepartmental workshops, musical performances, readings of literary works, visiting artist lectures, and visual art exhibitions.
UNO St. Claude has been host to visiting curators and local critics. In March of 2009, the gallery held HxWxD, an exhibition of alumni work to honor their contributions to the 30-year-old program in the past and future, as part of the university’s 50th year celebration. It continues to participate in Prospect New Orleans, the city of New Orleans’ contemporary arts international triennial. The gallery has shown exhibitions in conjunction with Southern Graphics Council, PhotoNOLA, and the Society for Photographic Education Conference.
