Alan Gerson began experimenting with wadding and shaping kneaded erasers more than twenty years ago as more of a stress reliever than a sculpture creation. This relaxation process morphed into an artistic act after one eraser suddenly took on the face of an incredibly realistic figure. Since then, following the lead of the materials and the initial shaping of the small heads, he has completed nearly a thousand little busts. These figures are striking in their detail, and seeing the vast repository of human features and characteristics from the artist’s mind in one gallery space is particularly fascinating and engrossing.
